Depth matters. Too little mulch does not suppress weeds or hold moisture, while piling mulch against stems and trunks can trap moisture where it is not wanted. An even layer across the bed, pulled back slightly from plant bases, works best.
Refreshing mulch as it breaks down keeps beds looking neat and continues returning organic material to the soil below, supporting the ongoing soil care that ornamental plants rely on.
