Meet Mark D’Asto

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark D’Asto, and I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. I come from a family of nine, including my mother and father. I am a believer, musician, husband, grandfather, nurturer, plant lover, and hard worker.
You may wonder what a city boy from Chicago is doing tending to plants in the great state of Texas. The answer goes back to my childhood.
I was introduced to lawn and garden care by my father, who had some of the most beautiful vegetables and flowering plants in our neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. I would often help him tend the garden and weed the flower beds. To this day, working in gardens reminds me of my meticulous father and the lessons he taught me.
He taught me how to identify insects and plant diseases and shared his own remedies for maintaining beautiful, healthy flowers and blooming roses. Our neighbors would regularly stop by asking if they could take a clipping from one of our rose bushes—or even borrow some of our rich, fertile soil. That was when my father introduced me to the importance of composting and healthy soil.
I never realized at the time that those early experiences would eventually prepare me for what would become LBJ Gardens.
How That Experience Shows Up in Your Garden
Those decades of hands-on plant care are what our clients receive today through soil care and organic fertilization, pest management and garden health monitoring, and photo updates for homeowners who are away.
A Diverse Background Built on Hard Work

My formal education was in electronics. In 1986, I earned an Associate of Arts degree in Electronics from DeVry Institute of Chicago. I then relocated to California, where I spent ten years building a career in technology and property management.
During my first four years in California, I worked in Silicon Valley and obtained two security clearances while working on early-warning radar detection systems for F-16 fighter aircraft for Varian Inc. and Litton Applied Technologies.
After government contracts began to decline at the end of the “Star Wars” era, I transitioned into property management. For the next six years, I worked as a “fixer” for large property management companies. My responsibility was to take distressed properties, improve their occupancy and financial performance, and then move on to the next property once the job was completed.
In 1996, I returned to Chicago to spend time with my aging father and eventually took on the responsibility of caring for his yard. I later worked in sales and even operated a small neighborhood music school for several years. Music remains another passion of mine, especially teaching and helping others discover the joy of it.
From Parks & Recreation to LBJ Gardens

After marrying my Texas sweetheart and relocating to Texas, I spent five years working for the City of Marble Falls Parks & Recreation Department.
I was often the person working on Main Street, caring for the beautiful roses and flower beds throughout the city. That experience gave me the opportunity to further develop my knowledge and appreciation for ornamental landscaping and plant care.
When the opportunity came to start my own ornamental landscape company, I didn't hesitate.
I have always had an eye for how a property should look. We often call it “curb appeal,” but to me, it is much more than that. I see a yard and immediately begin envisioning what it could become.
